With C2 Transfer, Synology has announced a new function for its NAS systems that is primarily aimed at companies: users should be able to securely send files to external parties, even if the content is sensitive.

For this purpose, the provider does not rely on a rights system for a company’s customers, for example, but rather a one-time password. External users receive the latter via email or on their smartphones. If the link to the sent file falls into the wrong hands, the data is still not at risk.

Data always encrypted

The data itself is secured with end-to-end encryption: C2 Transfer encrypts it before it is uploaded by the client and only decrypts it after the recipient has actually been allowed to download it.

C2 Transfer also includes additional security features such as image watermarks and expiration dates for the files, as well as downloads for one-time use. Details can be found in the announcement, C2 Transfer is free for the first 90 days and then included in the Pro plan.

Password manager – and more?

Furthermore, with C2 Password, a password manager sees the light of day. Synology does not provide technical details about the tool – but advertises that it is a “zero-knowledge design” and that data can be synchronized between clients.

In the future, C2 Password will also receive additional functions with which personal data can be managed. Which, gives Synology in the announcement not on. The tool is now available in a free version.
